The national Cabinet held a meeting, chaired by President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Friday, during which it discussed a number of national and regional issues, most notably developments in the political process and the implementation of the peace agreement.

The Cabinet approved the outcomes of the African Union Heads of State Summit and the C5 (African Union High-Level Ad Hoc Committee for South Sudan) meeting held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, earlier this year.  Key among them the resolutions on the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

The meeting, which took place last Friday, was attended by the Vice Presidents and Ministers. The Cabinet commended the report presented by the Minister of Presidential Affairs regarding the President’s participation in the recent African Union Summit and the messages of support for the peace process in the country.

Last February, the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel on South Sudan (C5+), during its meeting in Addis Ababa, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting peace and security efforts in the country, as well as support for the general elections to be held in December, 2026.

The Panel stressed on the importance of overcoming the outstanding political challenges and setting aside interests to ensure the successful completion of the transitional period. It also affirmed its support for holding the elections on schedule, despite reservations expressed by some parties regarding their integrity, and its commitment to working with various stakeholders, including non-signatory groups, for a peaceful transition.

The Panel also proposed a number of initiatives to address the political impasse, including a call for a consultative meeting of South Sudanese leaders to bridge their differences.

The C5+ Panel comprises South Africa (as chair), Algeria, Chad, Nigeria, and Rwanda. The Panel calls on all parties to prioritize the national interest, transcend individual and tribal considerations, and focus on the full implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement.
