The Executive Director of INTREPID South Sudan, Bol Deng Bol, has appealed to President Salva Kiir to consider appointing a new deputy governor for Jonglei State, a position that has remained vacant since March.
The vacancy arose when former Deputy Governor Atong Kuol Manyang was appointed as the national Minister for Trade and Industry. Since then, no successor has been named, leaving a key position in the state’s leadership unfilled.
Deng acknowledged the commendable work of Governor Dr. Riek Gai Kok, particularly in enhancing security across the state. However, he noted that the absence of a deputy governor presents a challenge in managing the growing administrative responsibilities in the state.
“In addition to providing support to the governor, the deputy governor plays a crucial role in day-to-day governance and ensuring continuity in leadership,” Deng said. “Filling the position would not only complete the state’s leadership team, but also help ease the workload on the governor, who already has a full and demanding schedule.”
A local resident, speaking anonymously, shared similar sentiments: “Governor Kok has made significant strides, but the role of a deputy is vital in sustaining momentum and ensuring the smooth operation of government functions.”
Deng expressed hope that the presidency would consider the matter in due course, emphasizing that a fully staffed leadership team would enhance service delivery and governance in Jonglei State
