English Premier League is now facing an uncertain future following the detection of new variant coronavirus. British media reported on Saturday morning that Premier League bosses have written to various clubs to tighten their grip on enforcing COVID-19 pandemic protocols to avoid closure due to the ongoing surge in cases.
So dire is the situation that 112 cases have been detected in the past round of testing, and the figure is inclusive of the League One and League Two statistics. Beside this, dozens have games have been called off following increase in infections among the players.
The English Football Association has called on the clubs to resume firm testing and observance of COVID-19 protocols. The bosses have been alarmed on three areas-match day protocols, training and traveling.
Clubs on the Premier League division will resume twice testing a week to up the vigilance against the virus.
This comes at a time that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson hinted at possible suspension of football matches to only assign an exception to the competitive sport by the top league division.
EPL sides have been affected in the recent past after players contracted the virus in large numbers throwing distabilising the squads. Last weekend, Man City missed three senior players in a crucial match which they won 3-1 comfortably. Aston Villa also confirmed infection of 10 players on Friday, January 8, complicating their campaign despite beginning the campaign in a good run of form.
