A 20MW solar plant, funded by the national government, was inaugurated earlier this week.

The project, which was built by Ezra Construction and Development Limited, represents an important step towards sustainable energy solutions in the country.

The power plant includes a 14MW storage system. The plant was installed using smart panels, inverters and data loggers, ensuring that the plant will operate at maximum performance, providing a reliable and scalable energy solution.

According to Renewable Now news platform, Ezra’s Chief Operating Officer, Nathanael Gebringos Ezra, said: “Our success would not have been possible without the vision and leadership of the Ministry of Energy and Dams. This project represents more than just infrastructure; it symbolizes a shared commitment to a more prosperous future.”

“The 20 MW solar power plant is designed to supply electricity to approximately 16,000 households in Juba, significantly reducing electricity prices and improving grid stability,” he added.

The success of the project was made possible through strategic collaboration with the South Sudan Electricity Corporation (SSEC) and the Ministry of Energy and Dams, which play a pivotal role in overseeing electricity generation, transmission and distribution.

The solar plant will account for 19% of the total energy distributed by Juba Electricity Distribution Company (JEDCO), a public-private partnership between Ezra Group and SSEC that is the primary electricity distributor in Juba.

The solar generation will complement existing thermal power plants. “However, to ensure reliability and long-term sustainability, additional renewable energy sources, such as the government-owned Nisitu Solar Plant, will be crucial in supplementing the thermal output,” the company’s statement adds.
