Around 2,000 South Sudanese fans are expected to watch South Sudan take on Djibouti in the second AFCON 2023 Qualifiers Preliminaries Leg on Sunday at Uganda’s St. Marry’s Stadium, Kitende.
Albino Kuek Deng, the spokesperson for the South Sudan Football Association (SSFA), revealed this in an interview with Radio Miraya yesterday.
He said the Confederation of African Football (CAF) had advised the country’s federation to allow at least 2,000 supporters to attend the second leg of the tournament in Uganda’s capital.
“I would like to confirm that CAF has approved enabling 2,000 fans to enter the stadium in Uganda for the match,” he stated.
The SSFA spokesperson added that “if you would like to watch the Bright Stars game, you will have to find a way to get into the stadium. If you happen to be in Kampala, get a ticket to watch the game.”
Bright Stars’ first game against Djibouti was played in Egypt owing to COVID-19 measures, and only a few officials were allowed to enter the stadium. The game finished with the South Sudanese team winning 4-2.
However, Mr Deng, believes that allowing fans to attend the game is a huge boost for the country’s national team to do better than in the first leg.
“We won our first away game and our team’s spirits are high as they prepare for the second leg match on March 27, 2022, in Kampala, at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.”
Djibouti will be hosted in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, because Juba National Stadium is under construction.
The two teams are currently in Uganda waiting for the second leg after the first one was played at Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria, Egypt.
A win or draw to South Sudan will take them straight to join the other 42 highest-ranked teams that qualify directly for the group stage.
