Lakes State Governor Rin Tueny Mabor urged the citizens to embrace agriculture and stop idling in the towns as the new year begins.

He said hunger is one of the key factors driving conflict in the state.

In his New Year message to the state’s residents, Governor Tueny assured the farmers of security and encouraged the community to take advantage of the opportunities to engage in extensive farming.

“There is nothing that will sustain us except agriculture. Go out to the villages and start clearances this time to establish farms,” he said.

“The people tried it in 2024, but it is not enough. The production of 2024 is to be the seeds of 2025. I want you people to farm for what they will eat and sell the surplus.”

“Do it yourself and your government will provide security for you,” Tueny added.

He urged the communities to eradicate hunger among them, saying hunger often makes people hate each other and engage in reckless talk and violence.

“I am always happy when I see people walking in the streets in the town happy because they have something to eat.”

“In the year 2025, the government will prioritize agriculture to ensure food security,” he stated.

Talking about peace, Governor Tueny said peace dialogues have been initiated between neighboring Tonj East, and Tonj North counties of  Warrap State, and Pakam in Rumbek North, Cueibet county Lakes State, to facilitate resettlements for peace.

Meanwhile, he cautioned the community against the Cholera outbreak and urged them to maintain good hygiene.

The disease has been confirmed in three counties of Yirol West, Yirol East, and Awerial respectively. Four people have so far died from the disease in the state.
