The Governor of Warrap State, Ambassador Bol Wek Agoth, has called on the people of Mabior Yar to comply with the ongoing State of Emergency and join efforts to restore peace and stability in Tonj South County.
Addressing a large crowd of local chiefs, youth, women, and elders during a visit to Mabior Yar Payam on Thursday, the Governor stressed the importance of voluntary peace and community reconciliation alongside state-led disarmament.
“With the force of a State of Emergency, we will manage to collect guns, but peace is voluntary. That is why I aim to disarm civilians and achieve comprehensive reconciliation,” said Governor Wek.
He emphasized that the security of civilians and their property would be a top priority for the government after the disarmament exercise.
The Governor’s mission to Mabior Yar was part of a wider campaign to engage communities affected by insecurity and inter-communal violence.
The local chiefs of Mabior Yar welcomed the government’s initiative and voiced support for the disarmament process. They also requested the establishment of competent courts to address unresolved grievances and land disputes, which often fuel conflict in the area.
“We are ready to hand over our guns, but we also want justice. Let our cases be heard in proper courts,” one chief told the Governor.
The youth leader of Mabior Yar, Machar Majok, also took the podium and encouraged his fellow young people to support the peace mission.
“I call on all youth to surrender guns,” said Machar.
“We also ask the state government to build infrastructures such as police stations to ensure the rule of law is respected in our area.”
In response, Governor Wek reassured the community that the government was committed to their safety and well-being.
“We will protect your lives and your property after disarmament. You are not alone,” Governor Bol Wek Agoth told the cheering crowd.
As a gesture of goodwill and solidarity, the Governor donated several sacks of flour and food items to the community. Meanwhile, Gen. Akol Ayii Madut, a senior military officer accompanying the Governor, pledged support to an existing healthcare facility in Mabior Yar.
“We will provide beds and mattresses to improve conditions for patients, especially women and children who suffer most,” said Gen. Ayii
The governor’s visit marked a significant step toward restoring trust between the state authorities and local communities affected by years of instability and arms proliferation in Tonj South.
