A civil society group has challenged the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to assess the progress of the 2018 peace agreement and to generate motivation for political will which will help in speeding up other chapters.
The Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organisation (CEPO), Edmund Yakani, said parties to the deal are locked in some disagreements, adding there is a need to mend the fences.
“IGAD should urgently take stock of the political developments across the country. Internal friction is on raise among the SPLM-IO as a signatory to the R-ARCSS including other merging voices for viewing the fate of the R-ARCSS implementation as facing challenges and political will for genuine transitioning from violence to peace,” Yakani stressed in a press release seen by the City Review.
Yakani lauded the positive steps made in reconstituting the transitional national legislature. To him, IGAD has to step up and put pressure on the implementation of the remaining areas such as the graduation of forces.
“It is better for IGAD to take urgent action for reviewing the progress on R-ARCSS implementation. The current political situation requires the parties’ signatories to the R-ARCSS to take primary responsibility with the full will to implement the R-ARCSS,” he emphasised.
