The inauguration of nominees to the Reconstituted Transitional Legislative Assembly (RTNLA) which was scheduled for July 9, has been suspended indefinitely.
The decision was reached during the extraordinary Council of Ministers’ meeting chaired by President Salva Kiir on Wednesday.
Deputy Minister of Information, Telecommunication and Postal Services Baba Medan announced the cabinet decision on Wednesday without giving a reason for the postponement of the event.
In May, President Kiir reconstituted the August House in line with power-sharing protocols enshrined in the revitalised peace accord to include members of opposition groups.
Over the past weeks, Kiir has issued some decrees, revoking and reappointing members to the RTNLA.
South Sudan has been run by the government without a legitimate legislature for nearly three years since 2018 when parties signed the peace agreement, stalling the enactment of some bills into laws.
