Jonglei State Governor Mahjoub Biel Turuk and his Deputy Atong Kuol Manyang have reconciled the stalemate over the Nyirol conflict.

In a statement issued by the State Minister of Information, Nyamar Lony Thichot, the two leaders have agreed to work together as they lead the state.

“The Council of Ministers’ Ordinary Meeting No. 11/2024 at 10:00 am, His Excellency Mahjoub Biel Turuk the Governor of Jonglei State, Her Excellency Atong Kuol Manayang the Deputy Governor of Jonglei State and the State Ministers have resolved all the misunderstandings regarding the administrative and political issues that have recently occurred in Jonglei State,” Nyamar said.

Nyamar said the two leaders have reiterated their call to citizens of Jonglei State to cooperate to work together.

“After a series of discussions, the two principals have solved their differences and have agreed to work together in cooperation with the state ministers for peace building during their time of leadership in Jonglei state,” she added.

She added that “The Government of Jonglei State reiterates its commitment for peace and cooperation between all the State Government Officials and urges Communities and the People of Jonglei State to do the same.”

The disagreement between the two leaders began on November 2, when Governor Mahjoub Biel Turuk issued a letter cancelling the State Administrative Order issued by the Deputy Atong Kuol Manyang Juuk.

The seemingly open differences in opinion between the duo attracted loud calls for cohesion in handling critical state matters. Jonglei State-based human rights activist, Bol Deng Bol, on Wednesday last week, urged the governor and his deputy to resolve their differences amicably over the formation of the high-level delegation to address the conflict in Nyirol.

The activist said it was beyond doubt that the Government of Jonglei State was yet again plunging into a confused trajectory, as these disagreements over who gets to take the initiative to form an inquiry committee to deescalate the conflict and restore peace in Nyirol.

“I want to remind the Governor and Deputy Governor of Jonglei State of the consultative and objective manner of leadership prescribed to leaders by the peace accord. They should revisit the guiding principles stipulated in the peace agreement,” Deng said.

“The Government of Jonglei State reiterates its commitment for peace and cooperation between all the State Government Officials and urges Communities and the People of Jonglei State to do the same,” State Minister of Information, Nyamar Lony Thichot, said.
