Derek Chauvin, a former US police officer at Minneapolis who was arrested over the death of a black man George Floyd, has been found guilty of murder.
Mr Chauvin was found guilty of three counts of murder after a lengthy court hearing that featured legal battles between his defence team and the prosecution.
According to CNN, the ex-cop was found guilty of ‘second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter’ in the case. The case was presided over by 12 jurors.
According to CNN report, Judge Peter Cahill who announced the court verdict also communicated technical steps involved in the case, where sentencing will be done in eight weeks’ time.
The defence team is to table its arguments in one week then a pre-sentencing investigation report will then follow and is to be returned in four weeks. A briefing on this pre-sentencing will come in six months.
George Floyd died after Chauvin knelt on his neck for nine minutes in a botched arrest in May 2019. His death caused massive protest in US that spilled over to parts of Europe as people called for justice for the family of the late.
The US press reported celebration out of the courtroom as some US citizens hailed the court verdict as they chanted ‘‘justice’’.
