President Salva Kiir has tasked the newly appointed Western Equatoria State leaders to return home and work to restore stability, social harmony, and peace in the conflict-prone state.

Kiir made the remarks during the swearing-in ceremony of the officials at State House in Juba on Friday.

However, he noted the critical responsibility placed on the new officials to address the mounting insecurity that has plagued Western Equatoria over the years.

“The only way the government can meet the expectations of the people is through cooperation and commitment,” said Kiir, underscoring the importance of teamwork among the appointees.

Incoming Western Equatoria State Governor, James Altaib Berapai, and his Deputy Governor, Justin Joseph Marona, took the oath of office alongside key national officials, including the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, James Mawich Makuach and the Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, Yien Chan Ruei.

The head of state further directed Minister Mawich to prioritise a critical development agenda for the nation.

“I want you to prioritise the provision of clean and safe drinking water across the country,” he said, stressing the importance of addressing basic needs that directly impact citizens’ daily lives.

The President’s remarks came against the backdrop of escalating security challenges that have gripped Western Equatoria State in recent years.

Several road ambushes have continued along main roads leading to Yamabio and within the State since the removal of Alfred Futuyo, a senior member SPLM-IO allied to the detained Dr. Riek Machar’s faction.

The continued conflict in Yambio and other parts of the State has undermined social cohesion, forcing thousands to flee their homes.

President Kiir appealed to the new state leadership to take urgent measures to address the grievances among communities to restore peace and stability.

“Return home and work diligently to restore stability, social harmony, and peace,” he told Governor Berapai and Deputy Governor Marona. His words carried a strong sense of urgency, reflecting the gravity of the situation on the ground.

In his address, the President also highlighted that restoring peace in Western Equatoria will not only benefit the state but will contribute to the overall stability of the country. He urged all political leaders in the region to set aside differences and work toward a shared vision for the people’s welfare.

While the swearing-in of officials marked an important leadership shift in Western Equatoria State, Governor Berapai and his Deputy Marona are yet to be seen if they will address the security challenges in the State.

For the people of Western Equatoria, the coming months will be crucial in determining whether this new leadership can turn the tide and usher in lasting peace and harmony.
