Liverpool bounced back from their recent defeat to their traditional rivals Manchester United after they dug a convincing 3-1 win over Tottenham Hotspurs. The Reds were put in front by Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino in the extra time of the first half when the forward tapped in Sadio Mane’s cross at the expense of miscommunication between Eric Dier and goal keeper Hugo Lloris.

In the second half Jose Mourinho’s men, who went into the fixture as the favourites due to the recent poor form of the champions, had a lifeline through Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s strike which came from 20 yards at the 49th minute.

English right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold then capitalised on Mane’s shot which had been parried by the French goal keeper to put the Reds ahead and thereafter it was a game to chase for Spurs. Mohamed Salah had a goal disallowed after the VAR adjudged that Firmino handled the ball in the build-up. But in the 65th minute, Mane clipped a third for the champions making the victory sure for Jurgen Klopp side.

Spurs were dealt a blow after Kane was replaced for what appeared like a setback of knee injury. Son threatened Liverpool’s makeshift defence of Jordan Henderson and inexperienced Nathaniel Phillips, but the South Korean was unable to penetrate and get a goal.

Liverpool comes from a string of bad results that has seen them register loses against Burnley and recently against Manchester United in the FA Cup. They sit fourth with 37 points behind Leicester City while Spurs are sixth with 33 points.
