Persons with disabilities in Maridi County, Western Equatoria State, on Saturday elected Eliaba Anthony as the new chairperson of the Disabled People’s Organization (DPO)
Mr. Anthony has been working for over five years with an organization supporting persons with disabilities in the county.
In his first remark after the election, Anthony appealed for support for the people with disabilities.
He said the continued lack of funding has always hindered their projects in the county.
“I urge the government of Western Equatoria state, particularly in Maridi County to support persons with disabilities and all the NGOs in Western Equatoria State to seek support and help persons with disabilities,” he said.
“We deserve equal treatment like any other person living in South Sudan. Therefore, we should be given equal opportunity to work in South Sudan,” he said.
He added that as the chairperson of the Disabled People Organization in Maridi County, he will advocate for the rights of disadvantaged people.
The election comes at a crucial time for the community, as the organization aims to enhance its efforts in promoting inclusivity and ensuring that no one is left behind.
Under the motto “Disabilities are Not Inabilities,” the DPO is committed to raising awareness about the rights of people with disabilities and providing them with the necessary support to thrive in society.
However, Anthony expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him by the members and emphasized his dedication to championing the needs of individuals with disabilities in the region.
“Together, we will work towards breaking barriers and fostering a more inclusive environment for all,” he stated.
“We should look forward and understand that the leadership aims to collaborate with local authorities, NGOs, and the community to create programs that empower people with disabilities and promote their rights.”
He urged all the members to work together to achieve their goal.
