Barcelona drew 1-1 with PSG at Parc des Princes but exited the elite Uefa Champions League competition at the round of 16 due to a 5-2 goal aggregate against the French giants.
In the first leg played last month, Kylian Mbappe stole the show with a hat-trick as PSG thumped the Catalans 4-1 in Camp Nou. The two teams once met in the UCL six years ago when the French giants ran riot in Paris under the tutelage of former Arsenal boss Unai Emery. But when they locked horns in Camp Nou, it was the Spanish giants that had the last laugh as Sergi Roberto skipped to guide Neymar’s cross into the box completing one of the most glorious comebacks in history. But this time, things were different.
Mauro Icardi won a soft penalty after being brought down in the box by Clement Lenglet and Mbappe stepped up to convert from the spot in the 30th minute. Lionel Messi then equalised from 30 yards smashing a shot in the corner. It was Keynor Navas show after the PSG goal keeper saved Messi’s penalty in the dying minutes of first half before making other strings of saves in the second half. PSG carried the day despite Barcelona’s resilience that translated into 16 shots on the host’s goals.
Liverpool kicked out RB Leipzig after winning 2-0 making it 4-0 against the German team on aggregate.
On Tuesday, Porto knocked out Juventus out of the tournament thanks to an away goal rule in their 4-4 aggregate. Sergio Oliviera opened the score sheet with a penalty in Turin before Federico Chiesa hit the double to bring PSG back into the game. Medi Taremi was sent off in 54th minute reducing the Portuguese giants by one man less. But their resilience forced an extra time allowing Oliviera to score yet another penalty to level the scores. Adrien Rabiot restored the lead of the Old Lady making it 3-2 victory.
