The SPLM-IG divide of the government has suffered defection setbacks due to the peace agreement arrangement necessitating an increase in slots for other signatory parties, the party’s source has said.

According to the source from the government side, SPLM-IG has no political problems. But the defections came as a result of individual political aspirations.

“The agreement [necessitates] that more than half of our appointments in the government is in favour of other parties, so the party cannot appoint many leaders in the government,” he alleged.

He added: “As a result, many defected from the party and joined other parties to find positions in the government.”

He went on to explain to the City Review that the turn of events did not exclusively imply fortune for the parties that reaped memberships out of defections. And, even though they received many women and youth, most of the leaders in their ranks have less experience in politics, hence, they cannot match the strength of bigger parties.

He said, “The parties were granted many seats according to the agreement, but they do not have enough leaders to fill those positions, so we see many young faces appointed by other parties.”

“Many of the leaders affiliated to us get distracted and join those parties so that they can obtain those positions that we could not grant them because of the government’s low percentage political allocations.”

He appealed to party members who did not win positions to be patient until the next elections saying it is just a matter of months to the poll.
