The Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) has urged the government to probe the May 2021 incident in which a cleric, a nine-year-old boy and two men were abducted and later killed in Lainya County.

In its latest assessment report, which covers the peace implementation progress in April, May and June; RJMEC appeals to the government not to let Lainya killers go unpunished.

The commission wants an investigation done by the Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring and Verification Mechanism, to bring the culprits to book.

South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) clashed with the holdout group, National Salvation Front (NAS), of Gen. Thomas Cirilo. Civilians were killed and others displaced as the two sides traded blame over who was responsible for the killings.

Meanwhile, RMEC has called on the National Transitional Committee (NTC) and the transitional government to approve funds for the Disarmament Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) commission.

‘‘…the DDR strategy and policy documents for implementation are yet to be approved by the NTC and the RTGoNU. The lack of progress on the DDR process is having a significant detrimental impact on the Parties’ and RTGoNU’s ability to deal with senior officers and soldiers who are not eligible to serve in the new unified forces,’’ the RJMEC report notes partly.
