The South Sudan Revenue Authority (SSRA) has launched a five-day in-service training workshop aimed at strengthening the capacity of its Internal Audit Division. The training focuses on building skills in financial accountability, transparency, and strategic planning as part of the Authority’s efforts to boost national economic growth.
Hon. Taban Abel Aguek, Deputy Commissioner General of the SSRA, in his opening remarks, emphasized on the importance of enhancing service delivery and aligning SSRA operations with the national economic agenda.
“We want to improve services,” he said. “By equipping our internal audit officers with the right knowledge and skills, we are not just improving our systems but also helping to grow the economy of South Sudan.”
The capacity-building workshop brings together senior officials and technical staff from across the SSRA, with a primary focus on the operations and responsibilities of the Internal Audit Division. Among the key participants were Kiir Yor Lual, Commissioner of Corporate Services, and Dut Kuol Dut, Commissioner of the Internal Audit Division.
The training covers a wide range of topics including the role of internal audit in financial management, identifying risks, compliance with revenue policies, and strengthening operational oversight. It also includes detailed sessions on strategic planning—an area the SSRA sees as essential to harmonizing its work with the national development strategy.
“The training is timely and very important,” said Commissioner Dut Kuol Dut. “We are moving toward a more accountable and professional public finance system, and this workshop will help sharpen the skills of our auditors.”
Commissioner Kiir Yor Lual also highlighted the significance of investing in staff development. “The SSRA cannot succeed without its people,” he stated. “Training and skills development are key pillars of organizational growth. We must continue to build a strong foundation for our audit and corporate teams.”
The SSRA is tasked with collecting and managing public revenues in South Sudan. As the country continues to implement economic reforms, the Authority’s role becomes more vital in ensuring that revenue collection is efficient, transparent, and aligned with national priorities.
Strategic planning sessions within the workshop are expected to guide the Internal Audit Division in setting measurable objectives, improving internal controls, and contributing to the SSRA’s broader institutional goals. These efforts are designed to support the government’s vision of a stable and self-reliant economy.
The five-day training is part of a wider reform initiative within the SSRA to enhance professionalism and efficiency in tax administration. According to the organizers, follow-up programs and refresher training will be held regularly to maintain momentum.
As the workshop progresses, participants are encouraged to engage actively, share experiences, and develop practical recommendations that can be implemented in their daily work.
“This is the right step forward,” concluded Hon. Taban Abel Aguek. “A strong audit division means a stronger SSRA and a better economy for all South Sudanese.”
