The Deputy Police Commissioner of Western Equatoria State, Major General Aboud Komoyangi, has died in Juba following a short illness, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering public service and a deep sense of loss among the communities he served.

According to his cousin Rose Komoyangi, the senior police officer passed away on the night of Wednesday, June 25, at a hospital in Juba where he had been receiving treatment for a pancreatic tumor. His death, she said, is not just a family tragedy, but a profound loss to Western Equatoria State and South Sudan at large.

“We have lost a pillar in our family and a man who gave his entire life to keeping peace and order in this country. He loved his job, and he served with pride and honesty,” said Rose in an emotional interview on Thursday, June 26.

General Komoyangi began his policing journey after graduating from the Sudan Police College in January 1985 as a Second Lieutenant, then he was immediately posted to Juba, where he worked in the Department of Migration and Passports. From there, he rose through the ranks, serving in several key towns including Mundri, Yambio, and Terekeka.

He was later appointed Deputy Police Commissioner for Western Equatoria State, a position he held with distinction until his passing.

Police officers from various parts of the state expressed grief and respect for the fallen officer.

“General Komoyangi was more than a boss to us. He was a mentor and a father figure. He never compromised on discipline and always insisted on service with integrity,” according one police officer working in Yambio.

From Mundri, Capt. Angelo Moro noted the General’s legacy of calm leadership during tense security situations

“He had a unique way of resolving conflicts peacefully. Many of us learned from his example.”

Also, in Terekeka, where he also served during his early years, Sgt. Grace Loki recalled his kindness and strong work ethic.

“He treated every officer equally and ensured our welfare was not overlooked. His death is a national loss.”

The late General Komoyangi is survived by several children. His dedicated service, of nearly four decades, has left an indelible mark on the South Sudan National Police Service.

Funeral arrangements are underway. His body is expected to be transported to Yambio for burial. Police officials and members of the public are expected to gather in large numbers to pay their final respects.

As Western Equatoria mourns, the nation remembers a man who gave his life to service and lived by the badge.
