Western Equatoria State Council of Ministers on Friday approved a budget of $131,748.80 for the construction of a new terminal and renovation of the VIP lounge at Yambio Airstrip.
The project, introduced by the State Minister of Roads, Transport, and Bridges, aims at enhancing air travel infrastructure and improving connectivity in and out of the state.
The request for the approval of $131, 748.80 would be deferred back for more consultations with the experts, and the Minister of Housing, as well as contractors.
Also, the cabinet approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Western Equatoria and Jonglei State, to facilitate supply of fish from Jonglei to Yambio and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The council also discussed how parents’ contributions in public schools would improve access to education.
In the emoluments review, a report on constitutional post holders’ salaries and benefits was discussed. In a memo presented by the Minister of Education and General Education on the parental contribution of public schools in town and outside, an approval was made because the government schools are collapsing and the parental contribution would help the teachers in the government schools.
Despite the President’s declaration of free education, the delay of the salaries continued to pose challenges to government schools across the country.
This agreement to upgrade Yambio Airstrip expected to generate state revenue through taxation on goods transiting to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The state government’s push to improve infrastructure and trade policies is seen as a significant step toward economic growth. However, observers argue that successful implementation will require proper oversight and transparency to ensure funds are used efficiently.
