Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel has issued an explanation revealing why the £47.5 million summer acquisition at the club, Timo Werner, is struggling to hit form.

Werner took the football world by storm after he racked double figure of goals while playing at RB Leipzig in Bundesliga before moving to Chelsea.

Werner is known for electric pace that he uses to beat the high-line defences during counter-attacks to get spaces behind them.

It is this sort of game that makes him suited against teams that play with high-line defences leaving a space to run into during transitions or counter-attacks. But this is something that he never found possible at Chelsea where faces most teams with low defensive blocks.

According Tuchel, his current-possession based football is also to blame for not getting the best out of the German.

Goal.com’s Chelsea correspondent Nizaar Kinsella details Tuchel’s feelings for Werner’s misfortunes.

Tuchel told Goal.com, “Maybe it is our fault because we have a lot of possession and we push opponent teams very, very deep in their half so spaces are not too big,”

“The biggest strength of Timo is to attack the space behind the last line so it is maybe also our fault in the dominant game that we play in the moment, it is very natural that the spaces are closed by the opponents.

“A game like against Atletico, is there any team out there in the world that can close spaces like Atletico? I don’t know. This is not exactly the opponent that you wish for Timo to show all his skills, so what is left for him is to not lose faith and work for the team.’’

Tuchel said he is training the team to use Werner’s pace in the tight spaces and he has all the support and patience to ensure that he helps the team. Werner has only scored a goal in eight games under Tuchel.
