A woman in Western Equatoria State has given birth to a deformed baby with the belly detached from the body in a ball-like shape.

The baby was born in Namatina Payam in Nagero County, about 45 kilometres north-west of Tombura Country on Thursday last week.

According to a close relative, the child has been referred to Yambio Teaching Hospital by health officials in Tombura due to the complicated nature of the baby’s condition.

Abel Santo told The City Review on Tuesday that the condition of the child was normal despite the ball-like stomach exhibiting scary signs that doctors in Yambio said required further medical attention.

“The child was brought to Yambio yesterday and was admitted when the doctors visited them this morning. They said the child had to be referred to Juba if the parents have the budget,” Mr Santo said.

Efforts to contact the Yambio health authorities over the matter were not successful by the time of going to press.

Speaking to The City Review on the phone from the hospital, Elizabeth Nguya, mother of the deformed baby, appealed for help to bring her child for further medical attention in the capital, Juba.

“I don’t have any means. The little money I had was used to board a vehicle from Tombura to Yambio, and it got finished. I don’t have any money now and I don’t know what to do. The doctors promised to come back with the solution, but up to now they haven’t, ” said Ms Nguya.

“I am appealing to anyone whom God has blessed so that he or she can assist me with my child to do so. Let them have mercy on me. I believed if I reached Juba, doctors could help the child live longer, ” she added.

This is the firstborn for Ms Nguya, 23.
