At least one man has been shot dead near Odikolong Residential Area in Torit Town, Eastern Equatoria State, the police have said.
The late Serjo Odiongo, who was a wounded hero, had gone to the forest to cut poles for building his house when he was shot dead by an unknown assailant yesterday.
Lt Col Mathew Ochan Jacob, the Spokesperson of police in Eastern Equatoria State, said the incident took place yesterday around 11 a.m., almost two kilometres from Odikolong’s residence.
“Late Serjo Odiongo was shot dead in the bush while he was collecting poles for building a house,” said Lt Col Ochan.
He said the investigation was ongoing and that further details would be established later.
However, the officer said the preliminary information established that the killers were two.
“Investigator is still there following the case. After he completes, he will update me. The Monyiemiji and the other police officers have followed up on the footmarks. They found that two people committed that act,” he said.
Lt Col Ochan added that the team found out that the suspects moved through Abalwa Mountain, passed through Idolu Bridge and entered Haforiere village.
However, a police officer said it was still premature to conclude that the attackers had come from Haforiere because any other criminal could also find their way through the village.
“A criminal is a criminal. Sometimes he will go near a certain village and divert to another area,” Ochan explained.
Earlier this month, three people were killed after a joint force of Hilieu and Ifwotu youth clashed with suspected Haforiere youth.
The suspected Haforiere armed youth allegedly plotted an attack in the outskirts of Torit town in an attempt to rob a pedestrian who hails from Hilieu.
