The Police Spokesperson Col. John Kassara, however, stated that security along the highways and routes interconnecting the states was stable, particularly during the New Year celebrations.

South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS) said on Thursday that the general security situation was relatively calm and normal countrywide except minor offenses registered for the last 72 hours.

The Police Spokesperson Col. John Kassar Koang stated that security along the highways and routes interconnecting the states was stable, particularly during the New Year celebrations.

However, the police spokesperson highlighted insecurity incidences.

Col. Kassara said on December 31, a male Sergeant from the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) was shot dead in his house by an unknown gunman in Abyei town. The suspect is yet to be identified.

Another incident was recorded on the same day, at around 9:00 am, involving a 45 year old male captain from SSPDF, who was found dead behind Jebel market. Our forensic team went to the crime scene and referred the dead body to the mortuary to establish the cause of his death and a case was opened in Jebel police division and the investigation is going on, Col. Kassara said.

He further revealed that on the eve of the new year, at around 9am, four suspected gangsters who were in possession of machetes and causing chaos in Thongpiny residential area were arrested and are currently under police detention being investigated.

Meanwhile, on January 1, at around 12:40 am, a 42-year-old male Sergeant from SSNPS who was under the influence of alcohol shot and injured himself in Shirkat residential area. He is currently under medication in the hospital.

On the same day, at the same time, a suspected gangster was shot and injured in his leg by unidentified person. The victim was taken to hospital for medication.

Additional, on January 1, personnel from the National Security Service (NSS) was assaulted to death by a criminal using a knife at Newsite residential area. A case was opened in Munuki police division and the suspect is yet to be identified.

On January 1st 2025 at around 1:30am one person was attacked by suspected criminals in possession of pangas (Machetes). Our joint Security operation rescued his life and the suspected criminals are arrested and are under detention at Sector Four waiting for PPA for further legal procedures.

In the evening of January 1, at around 6pm, the police spokesperson says unknown gunman shot and injured a Boda-boda rider on his leg in Suk Hajar. The Boda-boda rider managed to escape with the wound. A case was opened in Mauna Police division and the suspect is yet to be identified.

In addition to this on January 1, at around 11pm, a gangster assaulted a 19-year-old man using a machete in Gumbo Shirkat. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment and the accused gangster has apprehended by Sector One forces for further investigations.

Regarding traffic cases, the police spokesperson stated that the Traffic Police registered 14 minor cases, with one death during the last 72 hours of the New Year celebration.

Col. Kassara encouraged the public to assist law enforcement agencies in reporting suspicious and criminal activities to any nearby police station.
