President Salva Kiir has ordered the Secretariat of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) to conduct a comprehensive audit and evaluation of all party assets, investments, and related companies both at home and abroad.
The directive was issued on Wednesday, after Kiir, who doubles as the Chairman of the SPLM, received a progress report from the party’s Secretariat.
The report covered party activities, strategic plans, and preparations for the forthcoming general elections.
According to the statement, the directive also follows a recent visit by the party leadership to Luri Payam, where they assessed SPLM’s assets and investment projects.
The visit aimed at understanding the status of the party’s properties and businesses as part of broader efforts to strengthen internal systems.
Kiir emphasized the importance of accountability and proper management of party resources.
He said a full review would ensure that the party’s investments serve the interests of its members.
“The party’s leader emphasised that a proper inventory and management of party assets would enable the membership to fully benefit from the movement’s investments,” the statement said.
The chairman further stressed the importance of discipline within the ruling party.
He underlined that all members, including those holding public office, must adhere to party principles and structures.
“The Head of State underlined the need for strict enforcement of discipline in all party structures, including members holding government positions,” the statement added.
The audit is expected to provide a clear record of the party’s properties, companies, and financial interests, both within South Sudan and abroad.
Meanwhile, the SPLM Secretary General, Dr. Akol Paul Kordit, expressed confidence in the party’s readiness for the upcoming polls. He welcomed the position recently taken by African leaders regarding the transitional period in South Sudan.
“Secretary General Dr. Akol Paul Kordit expressed SPLM readiness for the elections, welcoming the recent stance adopted by African leaders, calling for no further extension of the South Sudan’s transitional period, highlighting the needs for the country to continue with the implementation of agreed timelines in the Roadmap,” the statement said.
The emphasis on implementing agreed timelines reflects growing calls for the country to move forward with the transitional process and prepare for credible elections. The SPLM leadership believes that strengthening internal discipline and ensuring proper management of assets will help the party present itself as organized and accountable.
Auditing party assets and enforcing discipline could improve public trust and internal cohesion. Clear systems of accountability are essential as political parties prepare to compete in national elections.
With the President’s directive now issued, the SPLM Secretariat is expected to begin the audit process and report back to the party leadership. The outcome of the exercise may shape how the party manages its investments and structures in the period leading to the general elections.
