At least 25 criminals were arrested during the new year celebrations on Wednesday for causing disturbance and attempting to mug the public at the Bentiu IDP Camp, in Unity State. The gang members were also drunk, an authority revealed.
Speaking to The City Review on Wednesday, David Matut Both, the Deputy Commander of joint police in Bentiu IDP camp confirmed the arrest of the individuals, stating that they were frustrating residents at the camp by mugging and stealing phones, beddings and money.
However, they were arrested before committing the crimes.
“All the 25 thugs were drunk during the new year celebration and they were trying to steal from people. However, they are now under detention at the police station in sector one gate,” Both said.
He added that the criminals, who were under the influence of alcohol, are from two criminal gangs Old Star team and wrong group team. Ten of them were arrested from wrong group and the other 15 from Old Star team.
The officer stated that the individuals could be released from detention since they were not found in possession of any stolen item, but were under the influence of alcohol and causing disturbance.
Both advised the youth to stay away of too much drinking to avoid getting into trouble or dragged into criminal activities such as stealing and causing public disturbance.
The officer added that Bentiu town was relatively calm during the new year, without any serious incidences.
Confirming the sentiments, Koang Machar, a resident of Bentiu IDP camp stated that this was his first experience in a new year where an attack or criminal activities did not take place in the area. He said the new year was calm and peaceful, without any incidences from gangs.
“I experienced a different new year celebration this new year. It was very peaceful. No one attacked the other. I actually went out and left my house unattended to but it was not broken into and nothing was stolen,” he said.
“I thank Unity State government for providing security to citizens. This should also proceed into the new year and even in the coming months to make this area safe and secure to the public,” he added.
