At least 109 goats were raided by the suspected Turkana herders along the Nadapal border.
According to the authorities, the suspected Turkana raiders attacked the community at the Nadapal border and managed to escape with a large number of animals, but there were no human casualties.
In an interview with The City Review on Monday, Kapoeta East County commissioner, Abdallah Angelo Lokeno, said he had informed his counterpart in the Lokichogio sub-county (in Kenya) and they are pursuing the attackers to recover the raided goats.
“There was a raid of goats on the side of Nadapal and the number is 109. The Turkana are the ones who raided the goats. There were no clashes and since the incident happened yesterday, people are freely moving,” Angelo added.
The commissioner called on people from the neighboring Turkana to always portray respect for one another and also consider everyone as brothers and sisters.
“Every human being should portray respect and everyone should also see each other as his brothers and sisters and not only focus on himself that he is hungry, but that everyone else,” he said.
According to the authorities, the criminal offense portrayed by the Turkana youth came after 7 months of relative calm among the neighboring communities.
In 2024, a two-day cross-border peace dialogue was held in Lokichogio Sub-County of Turkana County to strengthen peace and community resilience.
Rampant killing, child abduction, and cattle raiding were the key main issues raised by the two communities. They attributed these vices to the limited water points and grazing land.
The dialogue also resolved a need to map out the hotspot areas.
In April last year, Buno and Nyangiya communities clashed over pastures and waterpoints, which left one person dead.
As a result of the fight, Kapoeta East County government detained nearly 30 suspects and transferred them to Kapoeta town for prosecution.
