Western Equatoria State Minister of Information, Elia Usini Dominic has promised to return home to continue serving the state despite security concerns

“I am still a member of the government of Western Equatoria State, and the Deputy Governor, who is currently serving as the Acting Governor, remains my superior as the head of the state,” Usini stated.

This affirmation comes hot on the heels of President Salva Kiir’s recent cabinet reshuffle, which included the dismissal of several senior officials, notably Health Minister Yolanda Awel Deng and Western Equatoria State Governor Alfred Futuyo

The political shifts have escalated the fragile security in Yambio, the state’s capital. Usini expressed deep concern over the presence of armed soldiers within the town, noting that their uncontrolled movements have instilled fear among residents.

“We are all alive, but we are deeply concerned about the situation in town. The presence of uncontrolled soldiers continues to pose a security risk,” he remarked.

The situation intensified following reports of clashes between the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-In Opposition (SPLA-IO) in the Boo Bridge area, Rangu assembly area. These confrontations have led to civilian casualties and displacement, further destabilizing some parts of the region.

In response to these challenges, Usini highlighted ongoing discussions with the Acting Governor aimed at bolstering security measures to restore stability.

“We have agreed with the Acting Governor that security measures will be reinforced to guarantee our safety before we return home. Our commitment to our duties remains firm, and it should not be misinterpreted as abandonment of our responsibilities,” he clarified.

Addressing concerns about governmental operations, he explained that the recent relieve of Alfred Futuyo was part of standard administrative procedures, urging the public to avoid misinterpretations.

“One person was released, but who else was released? These are standard government processes, so there is no reason for me to abandon my job,” he said.

Usini also called upon the public to refrain from spreading misinformation and engaging in hate speech, emphasizing that such actions exacerbate fear and instability.

“I call on everyone to refrain from hate speech and misinformation, as these only create unnecessary fear. Let us work together for peace and the progress of our state,” he concluded.

The recent political and security developments in Western Equatoria underscore the delicate balance of South Sudan’s peace process. As the state navigates these challenges, the commitment of officials like Dominic to their roles and the well-being of the populace remains crucial.
