Police officers in Northern Bahr el-Ghazal State in Aweil have recovered over 90 cartons of food items for Demi Trading Company Limited.

Last week, a vehicle belonging to a private company that was contracted by the World Food Organisation (WHO), to transport relief items overturned along Aweil town road and got burnt to ashes.

However, some of the food items were looted by the residents.

The vehicle was carrying 50 tonnes of sorghum packaged in about 500 bags and 15 tonnes of CSB Plus.

“Today, we are officially handing over 42 sacks of sorghum and 90 cartons of Super Cereal Plus (CSB) to the Demi trading company that was contracted by the WFP in the presence of some WFP staff members, and the food will be taken to WFP stores,” said Aweil Police Spokesperson, Guot Guot Akol.

“According to the driver, the front tyre busted, the vehicle lost control and overturned. The track burnt into ashes and all the items that were in the vehicle were scattered, and nearby civilians took all the food items, ” he said.

Akol said after the looting, they conducted a house to house searches in which they were able to recover some of the items.

“We succeeded in recovering 83 cartons of CSB pulse and 36 sacks of sorghum last week,” he said.
