The Catholic Organization for Peace and Development (CODEP) on Saturday extended vital support to persons with disabilities, distributing essential food and household items to some of the county’s most vulnerable population.

The donation drive targeted individuals with disabilities, including the elderly, persons with leprosy, and paralyzed individuals, all of whom have been disproportionately impacted by the country’s economic crisis.

Beneficiaries received staples such as rice, beans, sugar, cooking oil, and laundry soap, as well as other essential items designed to ease the burden of skyrocketing living costs.

“This donation has come at the right time. The high cost of living has left us struggling to put food on the table. CODEP’s support means a lot to us,” one beneficiary told the media.

Persons with disabilities in South Sudan face unique challenges, exacerbated by the worsening economic conditions. Many are unable to secure stable employment due to discrimination, lack of education opportunities, and inadequate accessibility in workplaces. The cost of healthcare and mobility aids, such as wheelchairs or crutches, deepens the situation, leaving many without the necessary support to lead dignified lives.

In addition, the soaring prices of food and basic commodities have hit this group hard. With limited or no income, many persons with disabilities are forced to depend on relatives or humanitarian aid, all that have been strained by the current economic pressures.

“Even accessing public transportation is a challenge for us,” another beneficiary shared. “Drivers either refuse to take us or charge extra because of our condition.”

CODEP’s efforts highlight the growing need for community-driven initiatives to address the deepening challenges faced by marginalized groups in South Sudan.

CODEP’s intervention has been widely applauded by the beneficiaries, who described it as a “beacon of hope.” Many expressed gratitude for the organization’s commitment to helping the less fortunate during these tough times.

The gesture serves as a powerful reminder of the role local organizations can play in supporting communities and addressing humanitarian needs. “CODEP has shown us that we are not forgotten. This kindness will not only fill our stomachs but also uplift our spirits,” said a beneficiary.

In the face of South Sudan’s mounting economic challenges, initiatives like these shine as examples of resilience and compassion, underscoring the critical importance of solidarity in addressing the needs of the nation’s most vulnerable citizens.
