At least 161 goats and 23 sheep were raided by unknown criminals from Dorit Boma of the Imehejek administrative Area in Eastern Equatoria State on Friday.
According to the local authorities, the two communities of Dorit of Lopit and Arilo of Tenet in the Imehejek Administrative Area have been in a long conflict, which they said has claimed lives from both sides.
In an interview with The City Review on Sunday, the Imehejek Chief Administrator, Mathew Oromo said the incident happened in Dorit village and the criminals are suspected to have crossed from the Tenet community of Arilio Payam within the area.
“On Friday, some goats were stolen by unknown people and the suspected criminals are said to be from the Tenet area because they followed the footmarks up to the place called Nyarilo, which is in the land of the Tenet community,” he explained.
Oromo said the animals were raided from the water point while the herders were busy with other activities at home.
“There are 161 animals and from about six kraals and among them there were 23 sheep,” Oromo stated.
According to him, Arilo has been one of the suffering payams in terms of conflict, with all the neighboring criminals attacking them.
“My message to the people of Imehejek administrative area, particularly to Arilo Payam. Other payams have been silent because there is no problem but Arilo Payam has suffered from conflict, and the criminals have taken that as an opportunity for them to do their criminal activities.”
He called on both communities of Arilo of Tenet and Dorit of Lopit to remain calm and ensure stealing of animal come to an end.
Also, Oromo urged the elders, leaders, and the intellectuals from the two communities to talk to their respective communities to refrain from such practices.
“The elders, leaders, and the intellectuals of those communities should talk to their communities, to their youth not to practice these activities of cattle theft because these things will not take us anywhere. Let us focus on peace and development of the area,” he said.
