The commissioner of Lafon County, Eastern Equatoria State said the affected communities of last year’s flood are slowly restoring their livelihoods.

In an interview with The City Review on Wednesday, Magisto Ukach, the area commissioner said despite the situation still looking dire, the affected communities were coping up.

According to him, most affected communities are currently accessing Torit and Juba Markets to sell their animals, which, he said, is helping them to get more food to feed their children.

“Since the road becomes accessible to Torit and also to Juba, these local communities who were badly hit are trying now to reach with their animals be it cows, goats, or chickens to the markets, unlike that time when there was no accessibility to Torit or Juba,” he explained.

“So, local communities are now able to take what they could take to the market to give them something to eat.”

Commissioner Ukach praised health partners such as MEDEA for being the first to reach the area right at the onset of the flood last year.

He said the organization was able to establish Mobile clinics in the most affected Payam of Marguna, Burgilo and Kurumi Payam of Lafon County.

Also, he said the Norwegian Refugee Council provided the affected households with over SSP 200,000 per household.

Last year, over 2,863 households were reported to have been affected by floods in the area.
