At least four men have survived death after a vehicle they were boarding veered off the road and overturned in Jambo, Mundri East County of Western Equatoria State.
In an interview with The City Review, 1st Lt. Simon George Juma, Mundri East Traffic Police Inspector, said all the passengers had survived what he described as a serious accident.
“It was on Monday, afternoon. There were four men coming from the side of Mundri West going to Juba. They had a good journey but on reaching Jambo, a place called Chichiwa, the driver went off the road, and the car overturned,” Juma said.
He said out of the four men, only the driver ended up with a serious chest injury and was immediately rushed to Lui hospital for treatment.
“Although it was a serious accident, we thank God for saving their lives. Three of them came out safe and only the driver got injured because he was hit on the chest by the car’s steering [wheel],” he said.
Juma added that the driver had been admitted at Lui hospital for treatment and the other three survivors proceeded to Juba with the journey.
The officer attributed the cause of the accident to overspeeding.
“What we established was that the driver was overspeeding, and that is what we have been saying every day and night that every driver should follow all the necessary traffic rules and regulations to avoid such careless accidents,” Juma stressed.
“Our second blame goes to the real driver because we realised that [he] decided to give the car to another man whom they were coming together with, although he had a license.”
According to him, the owner of the car handed over the key to the colleague who later caused an accident.
He called on the drivers operating along the Juba-Mundri Road to avoid overspeeding on highways to reduce accidents in the area.
Juma said respecting traffic rules and regulations is one of the things that ensure the safety of motorists and passengers.
