The South Sudan government has announced plan to construct three major roads across the country.

The construction will be funded through gold revenue, according to the resolution passed by the Infrastructure Cluster meeting held on Tuesday.

The meeting chaired by Taban Deng Gai, focused on key priorities linked to road construction, financing strategies, and institutional reforms within the government.

According to the Chairperson, the meeting covered several critical developments and plans related to national roads and infrastructure projects in South Sudan.” They reviewed progress on ongoing highway projects, assessed new proposals, and discussed how infrastructure can support economic growth and regional integration.

One of the main highlights of the meeting was the discussion on plans to construct three new roads in different parts of the country. These roads are expected to play a strategic role in opening up remote areas and linking them to economic hubs. It was noted that the proposed roads will be financed through gold resources and other funding sources.

The meeting emphasized that the roads are strategically located to connect areas with mineral concessions. This approach is aimed at boosting regional development, improving access to markets, and supporting resource exploitation in a more organized and sustainable manner. By linking infrastructure development with resource-rich areas, the government hopes to stimulate local economies and create employment opportunities.

The meeting also revealed updates on the Paloach road, which is expected to connect Ethiopia to key oil exploration regions in South Sudan. The road is currently at the stage of authentication, a critical step before construction can begin. Once completed, the road is expected to enhance cross-border connectivity, facilitate trade, and support the oil sector, which remains central to the country’s economy.

In addition, feasibility and design studies for several road projects are already underway. These studies indicate that preparations are progressing toward the next phases of construction. Officials noted that careful planning and technical assessments are essential to ensure that projects are cost-effective, durable, and aligned with national development priorities.

Beyond road construction, the meeting also addressed institutional matters. Discussions are ongoing regarding the structure of the Ministry of Energy and Dams.

The proposed organizational changes are intended to improve efficiency, clarify mandates, and strengthen coordination in the management of energy and infrastructure-related projects. Participants agreed that effective institutions are critical for the successful implementation of large-scale infrastructure programs.

The Chairperson underscored that the meeting reflects the government’s broader commitment to improving infrastructure as a foundation for peace, development, and national unity.

He noted that the discussions focused on “critical developments and plans,” highlighting the importance of coordination across ministries and sectors.
