In significant steps toward growing economic ties between China and South Sudan, the Ministry of Trade and Industry on Friday launched the Beijing Supermarket in Juba.
The new supermarket, located in the heart of the capital, Juba, is expected to contribute to the local economy by generating revenue and creating jobs for the citizens.
Speaking at the launch, Minister Atong described the location of the Supermarket as both “convenient” and “strategic,” noting that it represents a direct extension of the cooperation between the two nations.
She expressed gratitude to the stakeholders of Beijing Hotel, the group behind the new retail venture.
The minister also acknowledged China’s long-standing support for South Sudan, especially in areas of road infrastructure, the petroleum sector, healthcare, and educational scholarships.
“China has been a true partner in our journey of development.”
“Their support is visible in the roads we use, the hospitals that treat our people, and the opportunities our students get to study abroad,” Atong asserted.
She emphasised that the new Beijing Supermarket not only brings greater convenience to shoppers in Juba but also serves as a model for how international investment can boost local growth.
“This supermarket is more than just a place to shop; it is a bridge that connects markets, cultures, and opportunities,” she remarked.
“I invite other investors to come to South Sudan. The government will give you full support.”
She further encouraged members of the Chinese business community in South Sudan to incorporate more locally produced goods into their shelves, pointing out that this would create a stronger supply chain and stimulate domestic industries.
“When you use local products, you help grow the economy from within,” she stated.
