“The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him.” — Proverbs 23:24
By R. Ssali
Yesterday, we joined the world in honoring and celebrating the strength, courage, and unwavering love of our fathers — the men who carry the weight of generations on their shoulders, often with little praise, yet with deep purpose.
In every village and town, from the banks of the Nile to the heart of Juba, we find men who rise before dawn to provide, who walk miles so their children can learn, who stand firm in times of trial, and who offer wisdom when the path ahead is unclear. These are not just men. These are fathers — the quiet heroes who nurture hope, who lead with humility, and who sacrifice without complaint so their families can thrive.
Being a father in South Sudan is no easy task. Many have had to navigate the hardships of conflict, displacement, economic strain, and cultural shifts — yet through it all, they have remained pillars of strength. In a world where the meaning of fatherhood is often misunderstood, and where masculinity is either misused or maligned, we are reminded today that true fatherhood is noble, godly, and desperately needed.
A father is not just one who gives life, but one who gives of his life — daily. He speaks blessings over his children. He disciplines with love. He shields without fear. He dreams not only for himself, but for those he is raising. He is a safe place in a troubled world.
Today, we also recognize those fathers who are doing their best in difficult situations — fathers raising children in refugee camps, widowers holding families together, men who have taken in the fatherless, and mentors who fill the gap when biological fathers cannot. Your role is sacred.
Above all, we look to our perfect model of fatherhood: our Heavenly Father. He did not love us from a distance, but drew near — giving His only Son, Jesus Christ, to suffer in our place so that we may have hope, healing, and eternal life. This divine love challenges every earthly father to lead with the same selflessness, grace, and integrity.
To every father across South Sudan: Thank you. Thank you for staying when it was easier to leave. Thank you for choosing peace when anger seemed justified. Thank you for building even when things around you were breaking. You are the foundation upon which homes, communities, and this nation are built.
May God bless our fathers richly. May He raise more men who lead with truth, love, and courage. Happy Father’s Day, South Sudan. Amen
