activist Bol Deng Bol, for reportedly criticizing the shrinking space of free expression in the State.
The controversy stems from a now-retracted statement purportedly issued by the Governor’s press unit, which Mr. Bol claims was a direct warning to him.
The removed letter warned Mr. Bol Deng Bol against his alleged spread of false and misleading information against the State Government.
However, the Office of the Governor of Jonglei State has categorically denied issuing any threatening statement against the activist, who serves as the Executive Director of INTREPID South Sudan and Chairperson of the Jonglei Civil Society Network.
In an official statement issued on Monday, the Governor’s office labeled Mr. Bol’s assertions as entirely false, emphasizing their commitment to fostering an environment of political dialogue and free expression.
“The Office of the Governor has not issued any warnings or threats towards the Civil Society Network,” the statement read in part.
The statement further urged the public to rely solely on official communications for accurate information and to regard other claims with “skepticism.”
Meanwhile, the Jonglei Civil Society Network confirmed that an official representing the Governor’s media team did issue a warning to Mr. Bol Deng Bol on August 31.
The Network claimed the statement was subsequently brought down after public outcry.
The organization further appealed directly to Governor Dr. Riek Gai Kok to guarantee civic space by not only demonstrating tolerance, but also promoting and protecting media independence, freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and association.
While the Governor’s office maintains its commitment to open dialogue, the civil society’s claims of intimidation and a deteriorating environment for free expression suggest a growing rift.
