President Salva Kiir Mayardit has expressed optimism as the Government of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) prepares to resume talks under the Tumaini Peace Initiative in Nairobi next week.

Speaking during an extraordinary meeting of the presidency held at the Presidential Complex, President Kiir and senior government officials deliberated on the progress of the initiative, which is widely seen as a crucial step towards stabilizing South Sudan.

Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro, the Minister of Cabinet Affairs, described the meeting as pivotal, stating that mediators have urged the government delegation to engage in the final round of negotiations with armed groups. The talks are set to begin early next week, as revealed by President Kiir in his new year message mid this week.

“The Tumaini Peace Initiative is essential to South Sudan’s stabilization process. It seeks to integrate the remaining armed groups into a unified framework under the R-ARCSS. This mechanism has the potential to address and eliminate all forms of conflict in the country comprehensively,” Dr. Lomuro said.

He, however, underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to inclusivity, calling on all armed factions to participate in the initiative to pave the way for a more stable and united South Sudan.

The Tumaini Peace Initiative, launched in May 2024, has made notable progress in fostering dialogue between the government and holdout groups that did not sign the R-ARCSS in 2018. In its previous rounds, the initiative brokered temporary ceasefires and agreements on humanitarian corridors, allowing aid to reach conflict-affected areas.

Despite challenges, including delays in implementation and mistrust among parties, the initiative has maintained momentum. Mediators and stakeholders, including regional leaders, have lauded Tumaini for its potential to close the gaps left by the R-ARCSS.

Speaking at the meeting, President Kiir emphasized the importance of the final round of talks in Nairobi. “This is our opportunity to show the world that South Sudan is capable of achieving lasting peace through dialogue and cooperation. We owe it to our people to resolve these conflicts once and for all,” he said.

The president’s sentiment was echoed by Dr. Lomuro, who revealed that the agenda in Nairobi would include discussions on security arrangements, integration of armed groups, and mechanisms for sustainable governance and development.

Observers have noted the Tumaini Initiative has the potential to serve as a model for conflict resolution in South Sudan, as it prioritizes inclusivity and builds on existing peace agreements. Mediators have praised the willingness of both government and opposition groups to negotiate, highlighting this as a positive shift in South Sudan’s turbulent political landscape.

With the final talks scheduled for next week, expectations are high. As regional and international partners prepare to witness the culmination of the Tumaini Initiative, many South Sudanese citizens remain hopeful that this dialogue will mark the beginning of a new chapter of peace and unity.

“The optimism we feel today is a reflection of our collective commitment to peace. Let us seize this moment to transform our nation for the better,” President Kiir concluded.

The eyes of the nation and the region will now turn to Nairobi, where the outcomes of the Tumaini Peace Initiative could determine South Sudan’s path to a peaceful and prosperous future.
