The head of state stressed on the urgent need to address the ongoing security challenges caused by the activities of armed militias operating along Ruweng’s border areas.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has reiterated his directive to the Chief Administrator of Ruweng Administrative Area, Stefano Wieu de Mialek, to intensify their efforts in combating cross-boundary crimes that continue to threaten peace and development.

He made the remarks during a high-level briefing at the State House in Juba on Tuesday, where Chief Administrator Wieu presented an update on the general security and development status of the Ruweng Administrative Area.

In his directive, President Kiir stressed the urgent need to address the ongoing security challenges caused by the activities of armed militias operating along Ruweng’s border areas.

“Peace, stability, and unity among the people of Ruweng and their neighbors must prevail,” he stated

The head of state noted that enhancing security would allow the local communities to focus on agriculture, which in turn would boost food production and reduce reliance on imported food.

He added that his government is determined to empower administrative leadership across the country to resolve local conflicts and support development projects that benefit the citizens. “Improving security will allow local communities to focus on farming activities, thereby boosting food production and reducing dependence on food imports,” Kiir said.

Stefano Wieu de Mialek, in his briefing to the President, acknowledged the significant progress that has been achieved in stabilizing the region. However, he admitted that cross-border threats continue to challenge lasting peace in the area.

“There is relative calm within the area, but we still face security challenges due to the presence of armed militias along border areas.”

The Chief Administrator assured the President that his administration remains committed to implementing strategic initiatives aimed at advancing peace and development across Ruweng.

He also sought the President’s guidance on ways to further strengthen governance and ensure long-term stability.

President Kiir praised the efforts of the local leadership in Ruweng, particularly their dedication to improving security and promoting development.

He advised Administrator Wieu to continue working closely with community leaders and neighboring regions to resolve any tensions that may arise.

“The efforts of the local leadership are commendable,” said the President. “But more must be done to enhance local governance structures.”

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from both the President and the Ruweng Chief Administrator to take all necessary steps to restore full stability and create a peaceful environment for development.

President Kiir’s firm directive is part of a broader national strategy to stabilize all regions affected by conflict, improve livelihoods, and lay the foundation for sustainable peace and economic progress in South Sudan.

As cross-boundary crimes remain a threat to unity, the call from the President underscores the urgency to act. Ruweng’s leadership, backed by national support, is expected to translate the directive into meaningful, on-the-ground impact on the people.
