On the occasion of South Sudan’s 14th Independence Anniversary, President Salva Kiir Mayardit delivered a heartfelt and solemn address to the nation, urging citizens to remain united, peaceful, and steadfast in the face of ongoing challenges. His speech, broadcast nationally on SSBC, paid tribute to the heroes of liberation, celebrated the resilience of the South Sudanese people, and reaffirmed a collective commitment to peace and progress.
“Today marks a significant moment in our national journey,” President Kiir began. “It is a day that reminds us of the deep pain we endured to gain our freedom—freedom granted by the Almighty Father, but won through the ultimate sacrifice of our martyrs, to whom we owe an eternal debt.”
He called for a moment of silence in remembrance of those who laid down their lives for the nation’s independence.
As South Sudan enters its fifteenth year of sovereignty, the President acknowledged both the strides made and the challenges still ahead. “The road has not been easy, but we have shown the world that the resilience and strength of our people are unbreakable.”
Reaffirming the nation’s identity and destiny, he declared, “We were born a free nation—born with dignity, identity, and a shared destiny. Let no one take that away from us.”
President Kiir expressed his gratitude to citizens for their enduring faith in the country and its leadership. “Because of your unwavering belief, we continue to stand tall. That alone is a victory worth honoring.”
Emphasizing the need for unity, he urged, “We have always been one. Let us remain united. Let nothing—no conflict, no division—drive us apart.”
He called for forgiveness and national healing. “Let us forgive one another. Let us heal from the past. The past wounded us, but it must not define our future.”
On the peace process, President Kiir reiterated his government’s commitment: “We remain fully committed to the permanent ceasefire. No gun shall ever again drown out the voice of peace.”
Looking ahead to elections, he assured the nation: “We will unify our forces. We will hold peaceful, credible elections. And we will not return to war.”
Addressing economic development, the President noted, “We are strengthening governance and investing in key sectors—agriculture, roads, energy, and education. Those who place self-interest above national interest are being removed from positions of responsibility.”
He delivered a passionate message to the youth: “You are the future of this nation. Reject tribalism and violence. Use your strength to build, not to destroy.”
Concluding on a note of hope and determination, President Kiir declared, “Let us rise in unity. For when South Sudan stands together, no force on earth can bring us down.”
Though public celebrations were subdued, the President encouraged citizens to mark the day in spirit: “Celebrate in your homes, in your hearts, and in your prayers.”
“South Sudan will be great—a nation united, a nation of prosperity for all. Happy Independence Day. May God bless you, and may God bless the Republic of South Sudan.”
