Known for his signature blue shirt, short black tie (drapped right above the chest and the long piece tucked inside the shirt), black trousers and the occasional navy-blue blazer, Nigeria skit-maker Oga Sabinus rather Sabinus has gradually become a darling of many, especially for those looking to recharge their mental wellbeing with rib-cracking skits.

On Friday, the comedian set feet in Juba, received at Juba International Airport for a much-anticipated stand—up comedy show today (on Saturday).

In a candid interview with the City Review Newspaper, he shared his first impressions of the South Sudanese capital: “The reception here has been wonderful. People are so friendly, and I must say, Juba is a beautiful place. I also enjoy the amazing cars I see around,” he said with a warm smile.

Expectation to accompanying Sabinus on stage is a talented lineup of local and East African comedians, with the likes of Wokil Jesh Commando, Comedian Talento Sundiata from Uganda, and MC Kash Owakabi. Additionally, the evening will feature guest performances from musical artists Amanie Illfated and Progress Zitty, among others, promising a well-rounded night of entertainment.

Reflecting on his journey in comedy, Sabinus expressed gratitude for the opportunities that have arisen over the years. “I joined the comedy scene a long time ago, but it wasn’t always on a good platform. Now, things are better, and I thank God for the mark we’ve been able to make in the industry,” he stated. Sabinus shared a glimpse into his humble beginnings, having come from a family with limited financial resources. “We might not have had much cash, but my family supported my talent, and that has been invaluable,” he added.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the entertainment sector was challenging, but it opened a pack of opportunities for the comedian, among other content creators. “While it was tough for many, COVID caused both negative and positive impacts. It gave us a booming chance to develop our content online. We adapted and found ways to connect with our audiences,” he explained. His biggest break would come in 2020, where he performed four sold-out gigs in London, demonstrating his growing international appeal.

When asked about his versatility, Sabinus emphasized that he is everywhere in comedy, from stand-up, sitcom to skits. “As long as it makes people smile, I’m there,” he said. His infectious laughter and relatable material have made him one of the standout figures in the comedy world today. “Though I wasn’t the best at school, I believe am talented, and my talent has allowed me to meet new people, make friends, and uplift others through my performances,” Sabinus explained.

Excitement is also building for collaborations with East African comedians including South Sudanese. Sabinus expressed enthusiasm about working with local talents, saying: “I look forward to collaborating with East African comedians.” He said comedians like Eric Emondi, Wokil Jesh Commando of South Sudan, and other local comedians are examples of talented comedians he loves their work. “The East African comedy scene is booming, and it’s great to see so many talented people making their mark. Some of the big names in the industry inspire me, like Mr. Ibu, Charles Inojie and Osoufia. They do the type of comedy I love,” he told The City Review on Friday.

When asked about his message for the South Sudanese audience, Sabinus said, “Thank you for the warm welcome and the support for the Sabinus brand. It’s a privilege to perform here, and I hope to bring joy to everyone in the audience.”

Sabinus captured what he hopes the night will represent. “Comedy is a powerful tool, it allows us to connect, heal, and find joy in life’s everyday moment,” he said. As Sabinus takes to the stage, audiences are sure to enjoy the blend of local and international comedy, making it a vibrant celebration of laughter.

“Though I wasn’t the best at school, I believe am talented, and my talent has allowed me to meet new people, make friends, and uplift others through my performances,” said Sabinus, a leading Nigerian comedian.
