Police in Northern Bahr el-Ghazal are detaining six suspects over the disappearance of funds from the South Sudan Education Center for Primary and Secondary School.

Last week unknown persons broke into the school located in Aweil and made way with SSP 858,300 that was meant for paying teachers.

Capt. Guot Akol, a police spokesperson in told The City Review on a phone interview yesterday that the investigators were given four days to find how the money got lost from the school.

“The attorney general has sent the suspects to the main prison in Aweil town and they are no longer in the county but are in the police custody,” Akol said.

Akol said it was a mistake that such a huge amount of money was kept in the school instead of the bank.

“Teachers are supposed to be paid through the bank but carrying such amount of money is not saved. The incident has already happened and the teachers will just have to wait for the court rule,” he said.

Archangelo Diing Lual, Managing Director, South Sudan Education Center for Primary and Secondary School told The City Review that investigations were still ongoing.

“The stolen money was brought by parents who promised to contribute to pay as fees for their children.

“They had just started paying on November 29 to 30 than December 1 to 2. So, that was the money paid in four days but unfortunately, the school bursar did not take it to the bank,” Lual explained.

Lual said it was SSP 858,300 that was stolen from the school.

However, Akol said the suspects pleaded not guilty despite all evidence.
