The Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Gen. Charles Madut Akol, on Monday launched the rehabilitation of the 24-kilometre Akuangap–Marial Baai road.
According to a statement from he Governor’s office, the project, undertaken by African Resources Company (ARC), is expected to boost local transportation and improve access to basic social services in Nyamlel, the headquarters of Aweil West County and Aweil Town.
The occasion was attended by the Acting Minister of Transport, Hon. Akoon Diing Angok, the Commissioner of Aweil West County, Hon. Abuol Akok Akok, among other State and County officials.
The launch comes just days after the Governor concluded his counties round tour last week, where he reiterated that his administration’s key priorities include peace and security, unity, food security, and the improvement of the health and education sectors, among other critical areas.
The Governor further assured locals that the State government will intensify efforts to enhance service delivery across the state.
While speaking to locals in Aweil South recently, Governor Madut called on the locals to remain united and to work closely with the government in order to overcome the challenges facing the State. He emphasized that unity of purpose and collective responsibility are critical to achieving peace, stability, and sustainable development.
He encouraged citizens to engage in large-scale farming to enhance food security and reduce dependence on humanitarian assistance. He further pledged government support through improved coordination with relevant institutions to boost agricultural productivity.
Commenting on the development, Dut Kuot Akok, a social media commentator, said rehabilitation of the road has come at the right time.
“Having been to Marialbaai last year for the first time, all I observed was a completely deteriorated road, from Nyamlel upto Marialbaai. And with that population density that qualified separate county alone, repairing that road was necessary.
Going for it with scared resources at hand is not about charity beginning at home but, Marialbaai-Nyamlel road is a vital road that facilitates basic services to thousands inhabitants,” Akok said.
Meanwhile, he urged the state government to focus on Aweil-Udhum road before the start of rainy season.
