Foreign Affairs Minister highlighted the strategic value of the partnership between the two countries, saying the relationship was built on a partnership covering political, economic, trade, and investment cooperation

In a historical step to strengthen its international presence, South Sudan has launched its embassy in Tokyo, Japan.

The event marked a new chapter in the diplomatic relations between Juba and Tokyo.

The inauguration was presided over by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Monday Semaya K. Kumba, who was joined by Tadayuki Miyashita, Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

Also present were Ambassador Alryiha Hydoub of the Republic of the Sudan and representatives from the Embassy of the United Republic of Tanzania.

In his remarks, Kumba praised the role of Japan as a trusted partner for South Sudan.

“I wish to sincerely thank the Government and the people of Japan for the warm welcome and hospitality,” he said.

The Minister also commended Ambassador Victoria Samuel Aru and her team for their dedication, “I praise Ambassador Victoria Samuel Aru and her team for their tireless efforts in maintaining the embassy despite challenges,” he said, encouraging them to continue raising South Sudan’s flag high in Japan.

Kumba highlighted the strategic value of the partnership between the two countries, saying the relationship was built on a partnership covering political, economic, trade, and investment cooperation.

He also reflected on his engagements during TICAD9 with Japanese leaders, the Mayor of Yokohama, the Nippon Foundation, Toyota Tsusho, JICA, and other institutions, describing those discussions as key in shaping the future of cooperation.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Victoria Samuel Aru, South Sudan’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Japan, welcomed the guests with deep appreciation.

“I am filled with joy on this momentous day and I thank you all for honoring the invitation,” she said.

She recalled the long history of collaboration between the two nations, “I reaffirm my commitment to work hand-in-hand with the Government of Japan to further strengthen the bonds of friendship and partnership.”

Representing the Government of Japan, Ambassador HORIUCHI Toshihiko lauded the efforts of the South Sudanese mission in Tokyo.

“I express appreciation to Ambassador Victoria Samuel Aru for her dedication, commitment and hardworking and to Honorable Monday for attending TICAD9 in Yokohama,” he said.

He assured the government of South Sudan that Japan remains committed to building stronger ties.

“Japan will continue to support and collaborate with the newly launched embassy,” he added.

With the Embassy now officially open, the day was celebrated as a proud symbol of friendship, diplomacy, and shared vision. For South Sudan, the establishment of its Embassy in Tokyo represents not just a physical presence but also a platform for deepening relations with Japan and advancing cooperation across multiple sectors.
