The South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) successfully repelled an attack on a defense riverine convoy this morning at Nyathor village, along the Sobat River in Doma Payam, Ulang County.

According to a statement from SSPDF spokesperson Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang, the attack was launched by a combined force of SPLA-IO fighters, armed youth from Cie-Lang, and affiliated militias. The assailants used combat support weapons, including anti-tank systems, in an attempt to halt the convoy.

However, SSPDF’s specialized riverine units responded with overwhelming firepower, forcing the attackers into a disorganized retreat. The convoy was able to proceed with its mission of troop rotation in Nasir without further disruption.

In an unexpected show of cooperation, SSPDF commended the Lou-Nuer White Army, under the leadership of Nyirol County Commissioner Hon. Bol Makuei, for their warm reception at Chuil and Dini River villages along the Sobat.

On a reconciliatory note, SSPDF has once again urged SPLA-IO and its affiliated militias to cease hostilities against government forces. “We appeal to all armed groups to end these confrontations and allow peace to prevail,” said Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang.

He further reassured the public that SSPDF riverine units will only engage in combat if provoked or attacked while in transit on the Sobat River.

This latest incident underscores the fragile security situation in Upper Nile State, where clashes between government forces and armed groups continue despite ongoing peace efforts.
