The University Workers Union and lecturers had earlier met, where they demanded payment of their arrears, which includes medical and air ticket allowances.

According to the workers’ union chairperson Robia Adam Hamed, the institution would be closed after seven days beginning Tuesday, if the government fails to pay them their arrears.

He said the economic situation had seriously affected them following the delay in payment of the salaries, and they could not hold any longer if the relevant state bodies do not respond.

Adam said they had come up with resolutions after their meeting, demanding from the National Ministry of Finance salary arrears of 11 months, flight tickets and medical allowances.

The union has planned the strike at a crucial time, when students will be opening from holidays. The workers now say, they will not set foot to the station and deliver their services to students if government does not implement their directive.

“If the government does not address these issues, we will close down the university totally and see what will happen next and we have given them only seven days,” the workers representative said.
