A middle-aged man identified as Peter Ocheng, on Wednesday, surrendered himself to the police after killing his son using a bow in Torit County, Eastern Equatoria State.
Speaking to the City Review on Thursday, Mustafa Albino Zakaria, the mayor of Torit municipality said the deceased had gone to intervene and stop his father from beating his wife. However, the man turned on him and shot him on the leg with an arrow, and later killed him by hitting his head with a blunt object.
“The boy intervened when he saw his father beating his mother. But the father went on and took a bow and arrow and shot him in the leg”. When he fell on the ground, the man went and too a wooden object and hit him in the head,” the mayor said.
Albino said the suspect was apprehended and taken into police custody.
Confirming the incident, Major Justine Cleupus Takuru, the police spokesperson in Eastern Equatoria state said that a middle-aged man had surrendered himself to the station, and was in detention undergoing investigation.
The suspect, he said, revealed to the officers that he had killed the boy. However, he claimed that he made the decision because the ‘boy was lazy and did not want work.’
“When we asked him why he killed the boy, he said he was very lazy and did not want to work. He therefore instructed his wife not to give any food to the boy or his family, but the boy’s mother went against his instructions and gave them food, which annoyed him and he started beating his wife for going against his word,” the police spokesman said.
Last month (September), a 37-year-old man was shot dead while he was trying to separate a father who was fighting with his son at Oronyo, Torit County in Eastern Equatoria State, over livestock for a bride price.
The 90-yearold man had disagreed with his son over the number of cattle the son was to take for bride price, accusing him of taking more than he had advised, an issue that angered him, prompting him to take out his gun.
Unfortunately, he ended up shooting another man who was trying to reconcile them.
Torit County Commissioner Christopher Andrew confirmed the incident but regretted not having dispatched officers to the scene on time due to poor road network.
