A 30-year-old man identified as Mayiik Garang has drowned in Akuem River in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State after he attempted to escape assaults from two armed men.

The Head of Police Major Garang Ngor Achien explained that Mayiik was running away from the armed men who were chasing him and was left with no option but to jump into the river through the bridge rails.

The police chief said the two men who were chasing Mr Garang are believed to be a member of the wildlife department and military police officer.

Ngor disclosed that the armed men who were chasing the deceased were arrested and detained amid further investigations.

“We took them to Wanyjok main police custody because we do not have a cell to keep them,” he told The City Review.

The law enforcement agent appealed to the public and residents around Akuem River to assist the police and report cases of drowning.

By the time of writing, Mr Ngor said the body of Garang was not found, urging members of the surrounding communities to help in a search operation.   

“The body has not appeared up to now and we are urging everyone to help us and the parents to trace the body,” he said.

Police authority also appealed to parents of the deceased to remain calm and allow the law to take its course. It remains unknown as to why armed men were chasing the deceased.
