In a message delivered on the eve of Christmas, President Salva Kiir reminded the public that the day not only presents a great moment for Christians around the world, but also a moment for everyone to reflect on the shared values of love, peace and unity.
The president also reminded families that this is a time to come together, to reconnect and share in the warmth of each other’s company.
“As we prepare to celebrate this season, we are reminded of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, who came to bring peace and goodwill to all people. As the Bible tells us in the book of Luke: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favour rests.” These words are as powerful today as they were over two thousand years ago, they remind us that Christmas is not just about celebration, but also embracing the true spirit of peace, kindness and forgiveness despite the challenges we have face this year,” the statement read in part.
Kiir reassured the South Sudanese and the public of the government’s commitment to prioritizing their safety and security throughout festive celebrations, and called on the people to come together, celebrate and share commitment for a peaceful and prosperous country.
“As your President, I want to reassure you that this Christmas, your government has prioritized your safety and security, especially for those who maybe travelling to the countryside. The government is committed to ensuring a peaceful and secure environment, not only during the festive season but throughout the year,” the President noted.
“Let this holiday be a time when we come together, not only in celebration but in a shared commitment to a peaceful, prosperous and united South Sudan. As we celebrate this Christmas, may we carry the message of peace and hope in our hearts into the New Year,”
“My family and I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year in advance, wherever you are in South Sudan or abroad. May God bless you, your families and our beloved Republic of South Sudan,” he added.
On the fateful Christmas day, the head of state alongside other key government officials would usher in the celebrations at the St. Theresa Cathedral in Juba, where various leaders expressed optimism in peace and cohesion.

“I hope that this Christmas brings blessings unity and peace, to the Republic of South Sudan. May it also be a Christmas that will bring our loved ones who are not with us in the country back so that we come and build this country together,” said Josephine Napwon, the National Minister for Environment and Forestry.
The head of state would later the following evening, on December 26, host senior government officials at his official residence, where, according to a statement from the Presidential Press Unit, the leaders ‘extended heartfelt Christmas wishes to President Kiir, expressing their commitment to working together to deliver services to the people.’
