A lawmaker in the Jonglei State Transitional Legislative Assembly has strongly condemned the killing of a local businessman in Baidit Payam, describing the incident as a gross violation of human rights and calling for immediate government action.

John Mabil Alier, a member of parliament representing Baidit Payam, denounced the fatal shooting of Malith Angau, which reportedly occurred on February 26 along the Baidit Payam road as he was traveling to Bor Town.

He alleged that the killing was carried out by wildlife operation officers.

“This senseless act is deeply disturbing, unacceptable, and a gross violation of human rights and the rule of law,” Mabil stated.

He noted that the incident is not isolated, claiming that residents of Baidit Payam have for a long time suffered repeated atrocities, including harassment, unlawful confiscation of property, intimidation, and the killing of innocent civilians.

According to him, such violations have become frequent and systematic, creating fear and insecurity within the community.

Mabil called on the Government of Jonglei State to immediately investigate the killing, apprehend those responsible, and ensure they are brought before a competent court of law without delay or interference.

“Justice must take its full course,” he emphasized.

The lawmaker further reminded Wildlife Operation forces of their mandate, stating that their role is to protect wildlife and enforce the law not to carry out extrajudicial killings.

If the case involved suspected poaching or illegal activities, he said, the suspects should have been arrested and handed over to lawful authorities for due process.

“The life of Malith Angau Anyieth mattered. The lives of the people of Baidit Payam matter. We demand justice, accountability, and an immediate end to these abuses,” the statement read.

The incident has heightened tensions in the area, with community members calling for accountability and improved security for civilians in Baidit Payam.
